Free Disc Burner is a simple tool to burn files and folder to CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

Although it is becoming less common as USB flash drives and cloud-based storage options become more pervasive, many people use writable optical media to store their data. Optical media includes CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs. Free Disc Burner is as the name suggests a freeware program that can burn files, folders and even disc images to these discs.

Free Disc Burner was originally released for Windows XP but has been updated for each new Windows iteration all the way up to Windows 10. It supports practically all writable optical media on the market. This includes writable media, which supports writing once, and rewritable media, which supports writing multiple times, as well as dual-layer discs and more.

The program is compatible with multisession discs as well as BURN-Proof and JustLink, which are optical drive technologies aim at making writing more consistent and less error-prone. Free Disc Burner even lets you erase an entire disc with just a single button press.

Free Disc Burner does have some minor and major issues that users should consider before downloading. On the minor side, the developer has never updated the Windows XP UI, which now seems quite dated. This exacerbated with an icon-based menu toolbar that mostly has nothing to do with the program at hand but rather links out to other software by this developer that you might want to use.

On the major side, many users experience a high fail rate writing with this software. It is not recommended to use this to burn images, such as burning a movie to DVD. We would recommend setting the writing speed as slow as possible to achieve the highest level of write consistency. If you need a free solution to writer data to discs, then this is a viable option, but in terms of performance, it is outperformed by most other solutions—free and otherwise—on the market.
